The novel was written in 1947-1948 and was published for the first time on June, 8th, 1949. The films with the same name were shot in 1956 and 1984. The book was not only forbidden in the USSR, but it also was exposed to boycott on the side of the left circles in the West. The writer, who was a democratic socialist, declared that it is not necessary to consider ⌠1984■ as a criticism of socialist ideas. On the contrary, in the essay ╚Why I write╩ (1946), Orwell insisted that all his works, since the period of Civil war in Spain, were ╚expressly or by implication against totalitarianism and for a democratic socialism as I understood it╩. However exactly in this publicism Orwell attacked stalinism, comparing it to nazi Germany. The majority of Orwell▓s totalitarian society▓s traits is borrowed from its prototypes ≈ Soviet Union in the period of Stalin's dictatorship and Hitlerite Germany. For example, the prehistory to the novel is copied from the evolution of the Soviet state in twenties and thirties of the XX century. Like German "national socialism" and the Stalin USSR, described by Orwell ╚the English socialism╩ encourages the hierarchy of the society and a cult of personality. It also actively uses the punitive system and concentration camps for the suppression of the nonconformism. Thus it is clear, why the book was forbidden in the USSR. The plot of the novel develops in 1984 in London belonging to the Airstrip One, which, in its turn, is a province of the totalitarian state Oceania. Oceania is in a condition of permanent war with two other totalitarian superstates ≈ Eurasia and Eastasia.. So, the Earth in the world of Orwell is divided between three most powerful military-political associations transformed to centralized totalitarian empires.
The elite▓s power over life and thoughts of the mass this is Orwell warned about writing about the totalitarian state and a modern society where the information has become the main power.
